OVERVIEW
From ship berthing to slope degradation, MS has the technology and software required to monitor the complex nature of ships and ports.
MS Fender Monitoring Technology (FMT) was developed through close collaboration with the world’s top marine monitoring experts and marine fender specialists to develop a market leading solution involving advanced Fiber Bragg Grating (FBG) Optics sensor technology.
With FBG optic sensors as a core component in the fender-monitoring scheme, MS Systems provides our customers with accurate and complete information about actual infrastructure changes in real time. This new, advanced technology revolutionizes harbor fender monitoring with smart sensors and software to detect fender design weakness, berthing accidents, and fender damage.
Further, MS System’s integrated services provide real-time notifications, of damage and failure, to key personnel to take appropriate action. With these capabilities, port operators can implement better berthing, extend fender lifecycles, and elevate harbor safety and maintenance standards.
MS Gecko’s fiber-optic sensing systems are also ideally suited to monitoring the slow and continuous ground movement that can ultimately lead to catastrophic failures in port operation. Slope failures constitute the most expensive geological hazard for many geologic zones in the world. Unfortunately, by simply having an appropriate slope-monitoring plan in place, many of these events could have been prevented.
MS Gecko’s system fully considers the contributing factors affecting port design, and includes sensors for temperature and ground movement to provide real-time geotechnical monitoring over large and often inaccessible areas. With a monitoring system in place, ground movement can be detected prior to a complete failure, allowing for appropriate remedial action to be taken.

BENEFITS
MS Gecko provides a comprehensive system to monitor and assess the real-world factors affecting geotechnical features. With MS Gecko’s SHM you will have the information you need to diagnose and repair problems as they arise.
1
INTEGRATED SOLUTIONS
MS Gecko’s Distributed Structural Health Monitoring (DSHM) approach provides our customers with a complete solution, utilizing ultra-sensitive sensors, such as: MEMS, fiber optics, etc.
4
CONSTRUCTION MONITORING
Put a system in place to monitoring slope settlement, and surface damage, and other geotechnical parameters.
2
INCREASED SAFETY
Monitor infrastructure degradation and receive warning notifications to perform preventative maintenance and ensure safety of structures, rail networks, etc.
5
VERIFY NEW TECHNOLOGY IMPLEMENTATIONS
Establish a system to actively monitor the implementation of new construction technologies and determine their effectiveness.
3
EXTENDED LIFETIME
Actively monitor geotechnical parameters to assess current conditions of existing infrastructure, and establish a maintenance plan for performing repairs to increase longevity.
6
IMMEDIATE STRUCTURAL STATUS INFORMATION
Get an immediate status update about infrastructure health, including possible damage and failures, following adverse events affecting the location’s slope and surface.
SENSORS USED
Our philosophy is simple: the sensing system needs to match the reality of its environment. Given that a point in space has six degrees of freedom (DOF), our solution has been to match this complexity with an integrated combination of sensors that can be deployed to suit each customer’s unique needs.
- 3DOF Inclinometers
- 4DOF Accelerometers
- Strain gauges
- Humidity sensors
- Weather station
- Piezometers
- FBG and Distributed Fiber Optics
WHAT MONITORING APPROACH IS RIGHT FOR YOU?
The MS Gecko Structural Health Monitoring system can be deployed to effectively address both continuous monitoring and portable testing needs.
Customers seeking a dynamic system to perform diagnostics on the current health of a structure will achieve their goals with the MS Gecko system.
For customers looking to collect data and provide ongoing information on the behavior and health of their structure, the MS Gecko SHM platform is ideally suited for long-term monitoring needs.
MS Systems Software Package
Software is a critical component of any Smart Fender Integrity Monitoring System. Whether performing a portable test on a structure or deploying a long-term monitoring solution, consider your software application needs for data acquisition, data logging, real-time processing and control, communications, data visualization and reporting, and post-data processing and management.
Many new possibilities arise from the invention of MS Gecko Smart Fender Integrity Monitoring System, such as fender assets reconfiguration based on historical berthing impact distribution, or accident or damage investigation using historical data replay.
MS Systems is your trusted partner for monitoring instrumentation in all phases of a project ranging from system design, installation, commissioning and training.
